New method of aortic valve replacement

In a modern, dynamically changing world, we quickly got used to technological innovations and the comfort that they bring to our lives. It is difficult to surprise us with something. But even against this background, the revolutionary nature of the changes offered by the new method of aortic valve replacement (TAVI) is difficult to overestimate.
The fact is that the development of technology in this case has made it possible to treat disorders in the work of the aortic heart valve – without resorting to surgical intervention. Judge for yourself: a few years ago, the only way to treat aortic stenosis (a narrowing that obstructs blood flow) was surgery. The patient’s chest was opened, the damaged valve was excised and a new one was sewn in its place.
Head of the Department of Cardiology at ACIBADEM University and ACIBADEM Clinic, Professor Sinan Dagdelen states: “TAVI allows access to the aorta through an artery in the groin or other area, without the intervention of surgery. Then the new valve is implanted directly inside the old one. “
Professor Dagdelen emphasizes that the increased technical capabilities of the method, together with the experience gained by doctors in its use, made it possible to reduce to a minimum the number of deaths and risks associated with such manipulation:
• The risk of bleeding, paralysis, infection, or damage to the lungs is much lower than with open heart surgery.
• The need to stay in the intensive care unit – only a few hours. After that, if the patient does not have additional problems with the lungs, anemia or kidneys, he is transferred to a regular ward.
• Within a few hours after the operation, a person can independently move, eat, maintain all normal vital functions.
• In addition, open surgery may simply be contraindicated in old age.
