Ophthalmology studies and treats diseases of the eyeball, its appendages (eyelids, lacrimal organs, conjunctiva), the surrounding fatty and bone tissue (orbit). To do this, ophthalmologists check visual acuity using special tables.

The ophthalmologist attentively listens to the patient’s complaints about vision and then conducts an examination: he checks visual acuity, intraocular pressure, fundus. If necessary, recommends additional research and consultations of a therapist, neuropathologist, endocrinologist, etc. Then he prescribes treatment. In some cases, he selects glasses for the patient, in others, he prescribes drug therapy. For trauma, glaucoma, cataracts, severe myopia or hyperopia, sometimes only surgery helps.

Eyelids, lacrimal canals, conjunctiva, sclera, cornea, lens, vitreous humor, iris, retina, optic nerve, oculomotor apparatus – all these parts of the eye are also susceptible to diseases and require competent advice from an ophthalmologist.
